On May 24 in 1909 first national parks in Europe were created. Those were nine national parks in Sweden - Abisko National Park, Garphyttan National Park, Gotska Sandön National Park, Hamra National Park, Pieljekaise National Park, Sarek National Park, Stora Sjöfallet National Park, Sånfjället National Park and Ängsö National Park. In 1999 EUROPARC Federation launched annual celebration of the European Day of Parks which is now held every year in and around May 24. The aim of this event is to raise the profile of protected areas of the Europe and generate public support for their aims and work. Protected areas all around the Europe are organizing wide range of events, gathering many people and teaching them to understand and support the nature.
